Amid farmland and forest at the western end of Hakodate Bay, the monks of Tobetsu Trappist Monastery live a self-sufficient life of prayer and contemplation.

First stop, the archives on Shimizu Street. I’m all about that dusty old paper life. But as I’m walking, I see this huge crowd near the Tobetsu Station. Like, what’s going on? I’m nosy, so I gotta check it out. Turns out, there’s a street festival! 🎉 Food stalls everywhere, people dancing, and I’m just standing there like a deer in headlights.
